Sculpture Garden

Surrounding The River House, the Sculpture Garden sits at the edge of a small lake that was carved into bayou Terre~Aux~Boeuf as a result of the crevasse of 1922. The site is nestled among live oaks and a citrus grove. Peppered throughout are sculptural works that address regional cultures and the vulnerability of the coastal environment. The collection of site specific works also reflects the social and environmental impacts of one of the most threatened land areas of the world. On display include Mitch Gaudet’s intriguing half-dome glass installations under a live oak, and Robert Tannen’s flat bottomed boat pyramid, among many others. Beyond the lawn, a series of walking trails extend into the neighboring woodlands which skirt the edge of the St. Bernard State Park.

The site provides sanctuary to a wide array of shorebirds including great blue herons, pelicans, ibis, and ducks. Our resident cormorants can be observed daily, wings outstretched, basking in the afternoon sun. Birds of prey and dozens of woodlands species from woodpeckers to cuckoos provide entertainment to birders on our woodland trails year round.
